IUD & Implanon in Bendigo – Long-Acting Contraception at Your Local GP Clinic
Choosing the right contraception is a personal decision, and long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) options like the IUD and Implanon are considered highly effective contraceptive options according to Australian clinical guidelines. At Bendigo Doctors, our GPs can discuss your contraception options with you and perform IUD and Implanon insertions and removals right here at our clinic in the Bendigo Marketplace on Mitchell Street. Both procedures are performed at the clinic, and it all starts with a conversation with your GP.
What Is Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC)?
Long-acting reversible contraception refers to highly effective contraceptive methods that work for an extended period without requiring daily attention. Unlike the contraceptive pill, LARCs do not need to be taken or used regularly to be effective. They are also reversible, meaning fertility can return after removal.
The two most common LARC options are the IUD (intrauterine device) and the Implanon (contraceptive implant). Your GP can discuss both options with you and help you understand which may be worth considering based on your individual health, lifestyle, and circumstances.
IUD & Implanon Services at Bendigo Doctors
IUD (Intrauterine Device)
An IUD is a small device inserted into the uterus by a trained GP or healthcare provider. There are two main types:
- Hormonal IUD: releases a small amount of progestogen locally and may also reduce or stop periods for some people
- Copper IUD: a non-hormonal option that works by creating an environment in the uterus that is not conducive to fertilisation
IUDs can remain in place for several years depending on the type, and can be removed at any time if your circumstances or preferences change. Your GP will discuss the options, the insertion process, and what to expect before, during, and after the procedure.
Implanon (Contraceptive Implant)
Implanon is a small, flexible rod inserted just under the skin of the upper arm. It releases a low dose of progestogen over time and can remain in place for up to three years. The insertion and removal procedures are minor and performed at the clinic under local anaesthetic.
Once inserted, Implanon does not require daily attention and is not visible under the skin. As with all contraceptive methods, your GP will discuss whether it may be appropriate for your situation before any procedure is arranged.
What Does the Consultation Involve?
Before any procedure is performed, you will have a consultation with your GP to discuss:
- Your medical history and any relevant health conditions
- Your contraceptive goals and preferences
- The differences between available LARC options
- What the insertion procedure involves and what to expect
- Any questions or concerns you may have
No procedure will be performed without a thorough discussion and your informed consent. If you would prefer to see a female GP for this consultation or procedure, please mention this when booking and our team will do their best to accommodate your preference.
Billing for IUD & Implanon in Bendigo
Here’s how billing works for IUD and Implanon appointments at Bendigo Doctors:

What to Expect on the Day of Your Procedure
Both IUD insertion and Implanon insertion are minor procedures performed at the clinic, in many cases completed within a single appointment, though this may vary depending on your individual circumstances. A local anaesthetic is used to help manage discomfort, though experiences may vary from person to person. Your GP will talk you through each step as it happens, so you know what to expect at every stage.
